Full field enjoyed Touch of Texas ladies tournament
  • A full field of ladies enjoyed a day of golf, food and fun at the Touch of Texas last month. The invitational scramble format tournament was called a Touch of Texas Hold ‘Em with a poker theme.

    Marian Barker, president of the Ladies Golf Association said some women’s tournaments were not filling up. “So we made an effort to get it full,” she said. They had to stop at 50 teams.

    Marian and her partner, Karen Taylor, (at left in photo) shot a 68 and won the Championship Flight after a scorecard playoff. Barbara Hardin and Dana Ward from LakeRidge and Joyce Wright from Hillcrest and Stacy Dennis from Dallas (at right in photo) also shot 68s. Stacy is managing director for membership programs for the Texas Golf Association.
    “Karen and I did not play boring golf. We were all over everywhere and got on the green and scrapped out pars and birdies when we had the opportunity,” said Marian.
    The victory for Marian came shortly after she won the championship flight of the Women’s West Texas Tournament at River Hills CC in Kerrville, capturing the title 2 and 1 in the match play final against Jennifer Holt of Horseshoe Bay. Marian started play Monday and kept winning matches through the week before winning the title.
    Marian invited Stacy to play in the Touch of Texas tournament and speak to the group to encourage more women to play.
    Stacy had not been to Lubbock was very impressed with Lubbock Country Club’s course. “It was nothing like she anticipated. She was shocked how pretty it was,” said Marian.

  • Closest-to-the-hole prizes went to Karen Taylor and Paula Lanehart
