John, Chris Zias win T-Par-T championship

Chris Zias thought he may have holed it.
He almost did – but his gap wedge from 105 yards out on the 9th hole Sunday still settled about a foot from the cup during the T-Par-T Shootout Sunday.
Once his dad John rolled it in the father-son duo had won the T-Par-T championship.
Chris said the shot felt good when it left his club.
“I knew it was going to be close. I saw it disappear in the shadow of the flag and thought it went in, but then it reappeared,” said Chris, stopping just past the flagstick.
His dad said, “He’s been solid all week. I knew the shot would be good and knew I’d just have to make a shot putt and I was thankful.”
His son added, “I made it easy on him.”
John offered another reason for their win.
“It was our gallery that supported us,” he said with a smile.
Winners of the tournament’s eight flights competed Sunday in the Shootout to crown the overall champion.
The eight pairs teed off on number 9. Eventually they moved to the 105-yard shot. A chipoff from the back of the 9th green reduced the field to two teams – the Ziases, who won the D flight and Joseph Artho and Glen Reinart, who captured the H flight.
They tied after shots from 105 yards and returned to the spot when Chris knocked the wedge tight.
This was the first time John and Chris – a Lubbock High grad who is an engineer with Lockheed-Martin in Fort Worth – had teamed up although John said he’s played in other father-son tournaments with other sons.
The tournament featured five 9-hole match-play matches – one on Friday, three Saturday and one Sunday before the top eight played in the Shootout.
